Abigael Huerta is only a sophomore and has already made a name for herself around school. Between her high academics and her major impact on the Wayne Hills Girls Soccer team, her accomplishments are nothing short of impressive.
Abi has been playing soccer since she was 6 years old, and has been playing at a competitive level since she was 10. Some clubs she has played for include PSA, Dynamite Academy, Matchfit, and her current club, World Class, where she plays on the girls’ ECNL 2010 league, one of the highest levels in her age group.
She first got into soccer due to her family’s influence, as all of her family members have played soccer in the past. Her sister, Sam Huerta, played on the Girls Soccer team before graduating in 2023, and her father played throughout his youth, and continues to play into his adulthood for an adult league.
“I’m mainly inspired to play soccer because of the sacrifices my parents have made for me,” Abi explains. “They’re always driving me to practices and games, bringing me to tournaments, spending money on clubs and trainings, and are always trying to help me be better.”
In her freshman year, Abi started for the Hills varsity team and was the only freshman awarded a varsity letter at the end of the season. This 2025 season, she continued to make a name for herself on the team, scoring more than anyone else this year with 17 of the 48 goals alongside 7 assists. Combining her two years on varsity, she has scored 30 goals and had 10 assists, which is great for a Sophomore.
Friend and teammate Sofia Echevery played on varsity this year and guested last year, sharing that “On the soccer field, Abi is always very hardworking, communicating with everyone, and having fun. Off the fiel,d she’s pretty much the same, just a little quieter. She has gotten more talkative this year, though, always sending encouraging paragraphs to the team and sharing her thoughts during team talks.”Â
Some of her most notable goals include her goal in the Wayne Hills v. Lakeland semi-final, where Abi scored in the last 15 seconds of the 1-0 game and sent Hills to overtime and penalty kicks, which Hills then won.Â
She also scored the first goal in the country final against Depaul, setting the tone for her team, which went on to beat Depaul 3-2 and win the country tournament.Â
“The past two years, Abi has been our lead goal-scorer and has done a great job at raising the team’s intensity and mood, and has had a positive impact on all the players. She’s a phenomenal player and is probably going to go D1.” Sofia says. Â
Besides soccer, Abi makes sure to be busy with school and is currently in Leo Club, Spanish Club, and Red Cross Club.
“Red Cross is probably the most interesting club I’m in, because we learn a lot about health and health-related things. I suggest everyone should join.”
Academically, Abi is taking 3 advanced placement classes this year: AP Physics, AP Chemistry, and AP US History. She also takes Spanish III E, Honors English, and Unified IV math. She was on the High Honor Roll all of last year and maintained it through the first marking period of this year, too.Â
Overall, it’s safe to say that even though Abi is a beast on the field, she still prioritizes her academics and involvement in the school community.Â
“It’s definitely hard to manage all that I do, but I make it work. I try my best to use my time wisely, and I’m always using my free time in school to try to get work done early so I have less to stress about. Getting things done early on in the week is probably the most helpful thing.” Abi advises.Â
Besides athletics and academics, she is also very artistic. She plays piano, and has since she was 6. She plays a lot of classical music and performs in recitals too.
You may be thinking at this point, what can’t Abi do? My answer to that—nothing. She has done and continues to do extremely well in all aspects of her high school career and still has two years left before she graduates.
