As the school year comes to a close, more and more seniors are being accepted into their future colleges and wrapping up their final year here at Wayne Hills. With that being said, it comes with a considerable amount of laziness from the students. It actually has a name called “senioritis”. The textbook definition of senioritis is “a colloquial term describing the severe drop in motivation and academic effort often experienced by students nearing the end of their senior year of high school or college”. It is driven by burnout and the feeling that the finish line is in sight. It seems everywhere around the school, from students to even some teachers.
As a senior, I can definitely say I’ve seen senioritis up close and personally have it myself. I’d say I got it once my college applications went in, and as the year continues to go by, it has gotten significantly worse. It’s a miracle I’m even writing this.
Senior Samantha Storzillo feels the same way.
“I think it’s gotten worse, more throughout the year.”
Kris De La Cruz is definitely a hard case of senioritis
“It’s a blessing if I even come to school because as soon as I wake up in the morning, I don’t have any intention of going to school or just thinking about it at all.
I was also able to get an interview with Mr. Fleissner. His film studies class is often a very popular class amongst seniors, so he’s dealt with his fair share of senioritis.
I asked him how he first notices a student is in the beginning stages of it.
“Somewhere around the time that college acceptances start happening, formerly responsible students stop submitting things. That’s how you first notice it.”
On the bright side, this epidemic is only temporary and effects the student in their finals months of senior year. Once graduations rolls around, senioritis quickly disappears as these students get ready for college. After years of test, homework and the same people, a lot of the seniors are ready to have a fresh start and move on.
