12 months go by every new year, and everyone celebrates all around the world, but for what? Why are we really celebrating another 12 months? Some people ask this question. Some answer to ring in the new year, or some just like to party. No matter which one you answer or if you’re the one asking, the one question is, is New Year’s Eve Overrated?
Everyone feels different. Some people are asleep at midnight and do not care about the ball dropping, some make a tradition out of going to New York City and watching the ball drop up close, and some party the night away and have fun ringing in the new year. A personal belief is that New Year’s Eve is so much fun and 100% worth celebrating, but New Year’s Day is overrated and full of superstitions that mean you can not do anything. People say cleaning, washing clothes, washing hair, or eating certain foods is bad luck for the new year. Some do not believe in any of this, but what do the people who do really know?
When asking a high school student at Wayne Hills High School, sophomore Mia Spano shares her opinion. She states, “New Year’s is a very exciting holiday, giving people a chance to make goals for themselves to improve for the new year so white I do not think the holiday is overrated, I do believe that people make a bigger deal out of it than it actually is. For me, a new year is just another day; the only thing that changes is the year. I can have the same goals on any other day, but people tend to really focus on setting goals on New Year’s Eve. It puts unnecessary pressure on people, especially because the majority of the time, people do not actually achieve their goals.”
Mia shares that she does enjoy the holiday, and it is not overrated, but people make it an annoying day full of pressure. She shares a view where the people ruin the day, not the holiday itself. Saying that people put unnecessary pressure on themselves to achieve goals and become a new version of themselves, which Mia points out actually happened very early. This is just one option, but everyone spends the day and the new year differently, so what really works?
