As the 2024-2025 school year comes to an end, so do the sports. Let’s recap some of the amazing moments that happened in sports this school year. The sports we are going to recap on are football, cheerleading, SDA, track and field, and soccer.
This year was a big year for the Wayne Hills football program. The Varsity, JV, and Freshman teams all beat Valley, showing strength and determination across every level. Varsity made it to the playoffs but unfortunately lost in the first game. The football games were full of excitement and energy.
Speaking about the football team, the Wayne Hills Patriots cheerleading team is always cheering loudly and keeping the crowd motivated. The cheerleaders work hard to support the team and bring school pride to every game. Their halftime performances were full of spirit and were very exciting to see. With all their amazing stunts, cheering, tumbling, and dancing, they show incredible teamwork and dedication. Here are some quotes from some students about what they think of this year’s cheer season. Freshman Layah Colabelli said, “I really loved cheering this year. It was an amazing opportunity to make new friends and improve in something I love!” Freshman Victoria Monte said, “Cheer is not just a sport its family. The bond you make from this will last forever.”
This year’s SDA Dance Competition takes audiences on a captivating journey into the imaginative and haunting world of Tim Burton. For the maroon team, pom was themed Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and the captains were Lexi Bonczek and Addison Diehl. Aero was Batman and the captains were Chelsey Fernicola and Sophia Kalendowicz. Tap was Alice in Wonderland and the captains were Eden Hession and Samantha Storzillo. Dance was Corpse Bride and the captains were Audrey Hinchmanan Emma Rivera.Relay was Dark Shadows and the captains were Kayla Polofonte and Keara Gayle. And overall was Bella Catania. This year the maroon team won. Here are some quotes from some students on the white team. Freshman Kendall Crawford from the white team said, “SDA was so much fun, everyone was so nice and inclusive, I’d do it more than four years if I could!” Freshman Kynsie Pistone from the white team said, “I loved being a part of SDA! It was the perfect thing for my freshman year and I can’t wait for the next 3 years of SDA!”
And here are some quotes from some students on the maroon team. Freshman Victoria Leo from the maroon team said, “As a freshman I thought SDA was going to be scary, but I turned out wrong, it made me happy and excited each week and made so many friends along the way!” Sophomore Adriana Hernandez from the maroon team said, “In my opinion SDA can have its ups and downs. It can take a big mental and physical toll on you personally throughout those couple of months, but as a two-year SDA member, if there is one thing that is always promised is the feeling of being accomplished by the end no matter if you’ve won or not. I won my sophomore year and lost my freshman year, but I’ve always felt proud and told myself that it was worth it no matter the result.”
The year saw a riveting track and field season. While the spring season was tough, many kids at Wayne Hills took home plenty of medals and attended varsity races. The season started with many dual meets against schools in New Jersey, including Passaic Valley, Fair lawn, West Milford, and lastly our rival school, Wayne Valley. Despite the harsh weather conditions this year, the track team pushed on through to the end of the season with co-ed relays and state sectionals, which they did exceptionally well in. May 30th and 31st are going to be state group meets, which I have no doubt that their performance will be great. We asked a member from the team about how they felt towards this season. Senior Sebastian Reyes at Wayne Hills High School, “Track was a lot of fun, though painful sometimes, I really enjoyed it and made a lot of friends. The team and coach were extremely nice, and I would do it again with my friends.” Freshman Deniz Ezgi Durgut said, “Being a part of the spring track and field was a great experience that was filled with life-lasting friendships, awesome coaches that made every practice fun, and very competitive yet fun meets! Can’t wait for next season!”
All in all, this year was great year for the athletes at Wayne Hills High School. While we saw you and downs, we all triumphed in our respective sports. As the seasons for spring sorts come to a close, we are left to look upon this year’s accomplishments with fond memories friends we made along the way.
