On Monday, January 20, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States.
President Trump is embarking on his second and final term in office after losing the presidency to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. In the first few minutes of his Inaugural Address, Trump shared his optimism for the future of our country by stating that the “golden age of America begins right now.” He then went on to say that America will begin to flourish and gain respect from countries all over the world, making it clear that he will always “put America first.”
As a member of the Republican Party, he hopes to bring back ideas and policies from his first term as well as carry out new initiatives. The Trump Administration is planning to take a conservative approach when handling controversial issues regarding the economy, immigration, abortion, and more.
Trump publicly stated that he is not in support of a federal abortion ban and is content with abortion being left to the states. Vice President J.D. Vance, however, believes in states having “some national standards” regarding the issue. At the end of the day, those who Trump appoints to the Supreme Court will have the greatest influence on abortion laws, keeping in mind their decision to overturn Roe v. Wade (1973) in June 2022 when six of nine justices were right-leaning.
When it comes to the economy, Trump is focused on lowering price levels and tax rates. He called for further lowering the corporate tax rate as well as eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits. While some people feel that these policies unfairly disadvantage the lower class, others are relieved to see less and less money being taken from their pockets. With everyday that passes, Trump will continue to address issues like these and enact new laws, aiming to improve the life of every American.
Americans, including Wayne Hills students, are split when it comes to their opinions regarding Donald Trump’s reelection. Students refused to go on record when asked to share their thoughts on Trump’s policies and emotions during his inauguration. Despite this, it is safe to say that January 20 was yet another day that will go down in history and Americans are waiting to see how their lives might change from here on out.
