Zohran Mamdani won the election for NYC mayor.
In this year’s election, Democrat Zohran Mamdani went up against Republican Curtis Sliwa and Andrew Cuomo, who is independent. Mamdani received 1,036,051 votes, while runner-up Cuomo was only a little behind while receiving 854,995 votes. Silwa was at the bottom of the chart, receiving only 7.1% of the votes.
Mamdani is a 34-year-old politician who was a New York State Assemblymember for the 36th District. He was born in Uganda and came here when he was at the age of 7. His muslim religion is a big part of who he is as a person. His victory in this election is seen to be significant by people who live in New York, and by people who don’t.
His policies are focused on affordability, housing, and social programs. Also planning on freezing rent, universal free childcare, making buses and transportation free, as well as making more bus lanes to make travel easier for all people.
Junior at Wayne Hills High School, Daniel “DAT” Tuchman, chipped in by saying, “I’m genuinely curious as to how he is going to fund all of this, because I’m not sure if socialism is the answer.”

Before the results were announced, Senior Vasili Vasilopoulos said, “I hear a lot of buzz about him in New York, it seems like he is gonna come out in the front of the election, yeah, good guy.”
Hopeful Zohran does great things for New York and keeps the place under control. Wishing him the best of luck as the Governor of New York!
