Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the filmed version of the Broadway musical Hamilton was released in theaters on September 5, 2025.
Hamilton, a musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of Alexander Hamilton’s life and his role in contributing to American history.
The musical first gained popularity due to its creative approach at a historical retelling. Its catchy music of hip-hop and R&B, creative wordplay, and overall modernization of the story make it fun for all audiences.
The show is also applauded for its diverse cast, casting many of the white historical figures as people of color.
The cultural impact Hamilton had was significant, bringing music lovers, theater geeks, and history junkies together, while also capturing the attention of other audiences.
The soundtrack alone is the best-selling and highest-charting Broadway cast album of all time, spent weeks at #1 on the Top Rap Album chart, and some of the songs have over 200 million streams across music platforms.
“I liked the movie a lot. I really liked it because every time I’ve watched Hamilton, I always watch it on TV at home, and am always listening to the songs, but seeing it on a bigger screen in the movie theater just made me appreciate it so much more. I noticed more details that I never noticed in prior watches, and the theater experience was just a lot cooler,” said Freshman Abbey Martinelli.
“I would recommend watching Hamilton in theaters to others because I feel like it means so much more on the big screen. You can see everything clearer, and I feel like it gets the message across way more. It is especially fun to watch with other people, so you can all enjoy and cherish it in your own ways,” said another Freshman, Marissa Hablitz.
Over its opening weekend, the rerelease of Hamilton took in $10.1 million at the box office.
The filmed version of the musical is 2 hours and 40 minutes long, and in theaters, there is a 9 to 10-minute intermission to reenact a real musical.
Not only was this musical important for the audience, but it was also important to its writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The success of the show highlighted Miranda’s talents, which helped him score jobs in songwriting for movie hits like Moana and Encanto, and has given him many other songwriting and soundtrack features.
All in all, Hamilton had, and still has an amazing impact on modern film and media, and it is definitely worth watching at the theaters.
