Dancers at Wayne Hills are on their toes as tryouts for the 2022-2023 Varsity Dance Team are almost here.

This past Wednesday, Hills held an introductory meeting for any dancer showing interest in trying out for the team. At the meeting, Coach Mayo discussed tryout qualifications, dates, and information about the new season.

As of right now, tryout practice, where Coach Mayo will observe each dancer and give choreography, will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd, and official tryouts will follow on Friday, November 4th.

Anyone trying out for the team must come to tryouts prepared with appropriate attire, skill, energy, and a positive attitude. The judges will be assessing each dancer on a score/point-based system, looking for qualities such as precision, flexibility, facial expressions, and technique.

There is only one Varsity team, but two different levels each dancer can meet: the first level allows for the dancer to be in the hip-hop production, while the second level allows for them to be in both the hip-hop and jazz/pom production. Meeting the second level requires a more advanced execution of these qualities.

This season is looking to be slightly different than last year. As COVID-19 restrictions have settled, for the most part, the Dance Team hopes to perform at both weekend basketball games and competitions, as well as partake in additional team bonding and fundraising events. There are also captain positions as opposed to council positions this year, which only seniors can qualify for. Although this season will be different from last year, the team will still carry on being fun, supportive, and successful!

Coach Mayo and everyone trying out for the Dance Team are excited for the big days in November! Within the next two weeks, both new and old members of the Wayne Hills Varsity Dance Team will be ready to bring it for the 2022-2023 season.
