The Surprising Star-Spangled Duo’s Appearance at the Marching Band Competition

By Samantha Segreto

In the early evening of Saturday, October 19, the WHHS Marching Band had its final home competition of the year, an event both joyful and saddening for most of the members. Before it began, the Chamber Choir was scheduled to perform the national anthem for all to hear, a musical arrangement that the singers had been practicing for weeks. However, due to the unfortunate timing and insufficient attendance, only two girls were able to present the song, frightfully all on their own. Both seniors, Kaitlyn Kerwin and Brooke Baldino, stepped up to the microphone with a confusing mix of overwhelming nerves and unflagging confidence throughout them both. When asked about how the performance went overall, Kerwin stated excitedly, “The performance on Saturday actually went well! Even though it was just Brooke and I there to represent the choir, I think we did a pretty good job at displaying the flexibility of the choir and our passionate dedication to the program.”

Instead of being able to execute the usual three-part song of Soprano 1, Soprano 2, and Alto, the girls, as a result of there only being two of them, were only able to sing a version with strictly Soprano 1 and Soprano 2. Fortunately, their excellent preparation and determination allowed them to still produce a rich and harmonious sound that filled the entire expanse of land with music and national pride.
