Wayne Hills is excited to announce the return of the Asian Affinity Club!

The Asian Affinity Club was started to educate the student body on Asian cultures and experiences. Although the club was started about two years ago, it wasn’t very active; however, the club is back with a fresh start this year.

With this new beginning also comes new goals for the club. Senior Christina Chen, the current co-president of the club, said, “Our plan for this club is to promote cultural understanding and inclusion. While many of our members happen to be Asian, there’s always more to learn!” Everyone is welcome to join and share their own experiences to further the club’s mission of celebrating Asian culture.

The club’s meetings are packed with fun and informative activities. During the first meeting on October 2nd, members were able to get a taste of Asian culture through fun activities such as the Korean game gonggi; the game is traditionally played using five or more small pebbles or colorful plastic stones. Each player tosses the stones from the palm of their hand into the air. While the stones are airborne, the players flip their hands backside up and catch as many stones as possible; the person who catches the most stones wins!

The meeting also included paper crane origami, a delicate and beautiful art that originated in Japan and China. Members were able to practice the art of paper folding and form exquisite figures. During the entirety of the meeting, a fun quiz on Asian culture was played with multiple Asian countries and their customs included in the questions. The meeting was a very fun and educational experience and incorporated fundamental elements of Asian culture into its activities.

For future meetings, the Asian Affinity Club has many goals and aspirations. When asked about future plans of the club, co-president Christina Chen said, “We plan on having meetings where our members can learn about and celebrate traditional holidays like Diwali and Lunar New Year, play games, participate in arts and crafts, talk about their experiences through discussion panels, and potentially listen to some guest speakers.” With a hopeful outlook for the future, Christina noted, “Our first meeting had such an amazing turnout and we’re so excited for the year that is ahead of us!”

The Asian Affinity Club is open to anyone and everyone to join; all are welcome! If you’re interested in learning more about Asian culture and traditions, be sure to join the Asian Affinity Club to be enlightened and have tons of fun!
