The Band Through the Ages concert is an annual concert that takes place at Schuyler Colfax Middle School, with the purpose of allowing middle school students to get a sneak peak at what playing music in high school could look like.
The concert started off with the Schuyler Colfax 6th and 7th grade band. It was followed by the 8th grade performance. they had been preparing for several months, and had a well-deserved, successful performance.
After the middle school bands played, it was time for the Wayne Hills Band to shine.
Something notable about the high school performance was the selection of music. One of the songs performed by the Wayne Hills Symphonic Band was Caribana by Omar Thomas. The song is lively and has notable Latin adjacent roots. When selecting the music, Head Band Director at Wayne Hills, Ms. Pascale states that she wanted the music she selected to be “fun for the musicians to play, fun for the audience to hear, while also hitting important educational concepts such as … culture … music fundamentals … rhythm, counting, [and] tone.”
After the high school performance, there was a performance that combined all 3 bands: the high school band, 8th grade band, and the 6th and 7th grade band. The students got to perform American Pride, together, as one band. Pascale says finds this moment meaningful, and states that “we all got to connect and make music together as a community. 6th grade through 12th grade. That’s so special.”
Since this concert was a great opportunity to connect with future band members, Recruiting Officer Julia Hrytsko was certainly in attendance. Hrytsko took this concert as an opportunity to have students to better understand the amazing band program at Wayne Hills. Hrytsko left us with some final remarks, and states that pursuing music in high school is, “very beneficial for your future and as a person … the bonds you make are so great and unforgettable.”
