One of the bosses of the Cosa Nostra Mafia in Sicily and Italy’s most wanted man, Matteo Messina Denoaro, was arrested by police while being treated in a private health clinic.

According to CNN, he was taken into custody around 10 a.m. local time after a raid carried out by more than 100 specialized agents with the anti-Mafia Carabineri.

Matteo Messina Denaro also known as Diabolik is one of the successors of Bernardo Provenzano, who was arrested in 2006. As well as the protege of Toto Riina, head of the Corleone clan, who was also arrested in 1993.

Crime runs in the Denaro blood. On April 26, 1992, Messina Denaro was born to a known Mafia boss in Sicily. Both his brother, Salvator Messina Denaro, and sister Patrizia Messina Denaro have been arrested for their involvement in the Mafia.

Denaro is considered to be Cosa Nostra’s last “secret keeper”. Many believe that he holds all the information and the names of those involved in a lot of high-profile crimes by the Mafia.

He has a daughter with his fiancee Franca Alagna and has had other romantic relationships.

He was considered by Europol one of the most wanted men in Europe and has been a fugitive since 1993.

Denoro is thought to have ordered dozens of Mafia-related murders. In 1992 he was given a life sentence in absentia for his involvement in the separate murders of anti-Mafia prosecutors Paolo Borsellino and Glovanni Falcone.

His most recent life sentence was in 2020 for a fatal bombing in Milan, Florence, and Rome in the late 1990s, and for murdering and torturing the 11-year-old son of an enemy who gave evidence against the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.

A woman here at Wayne Hills, whose name will not be shared for the safety of her and her family says, “ It’s a good thing but it won’t stop anything. The corruption and mafia are so present in Southern Italy that this will not stop anything.

The people of Italy, their prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, and his wife are very pleased with this arrest claiming “This is a great victory for the state.”
