Abortions Over the Phone?

By Priscilla Aquino

Abortion has been a difficult subject for many, however Australia is giving women the option to get an abortion without having to go see a doctor. For $250 women  can arrange an abortion over the phone. They can book ultrasounds, and blood tests and the ‘abortion pill’ RU486 can be delivered to their door. RU486 was legalized in Australia in 2006 but not many doctors haven’t applied for a license to distribute it. The service will not be available in South Australia, the Northern Territory or the Australian Capital Territory because it would be illegal. In Queensland and NSW abortion is still a crime but may be carried out at the discretion of a doctor.

Counselling will be available to women before and after the abortion through the service and a letter will be included in the kit posted to them that details the medication they are taking and can be presented to a doctor if any complications arise. Women no longer have to feel intimidated because they don’t feel comfortable or safe trying to go to a clinic. These women deserve to have the right, without feeling like they are being judged by a doctor or anyone else. Christina Caamano, an English teacher here at WHHS, said, “I feel as though this is such a personal matter, so I think this kind of thing should be done in person. However, I could understand why someone would not want to go to a clinic. A lot of times there are protesters outside the building and it leads women to feel very uncomfortable in a situation where they are already in an emotional state.”
