Flashback to one year ago and the Wayne Hills Boys Soccer team would be laying on the turf of Wayne Valley in sorrow, after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Depaul Catholic in the 2014 Passaic County Finals.

If you looked at the team this past Saturday, they would look like the happiest team on the planet.

On Saturday, WHBS faced off against Depaul in the 2015 Passaic County Quarterfinals, seeking revenge for what happened almost one year ago. Both teams were coming on hot, with Wayne Hills beating a solid Pascak Valley side on Tuesday, and Depaul having already beaten Don Bosco Prep and Paramus Catholic.

The game started off slow and relatively evenly, but as the first half was coming to a close Depaul hit the post and crossbar off a corner and throw in, scaring Hills until the halftime whistle came to their relief.

The second half was a completely different game. Wayne Hills came out on fire, as they began to get themselves back into the game. Five minutes later, of a pass from junior midfielder Austin Conrado, Depaul’s goalie and Hills player Harris Rosen collided, leaving the ball and the goal wide open. Instinctively, Wayne Hills’ captain Garret Vandermay scrambled to the loose ball, and shot a brilliant chip right over the fallen goalie.

“All I could think about was getting to the ball and finding the net at the end of the shot. It felt good off my foot, I knew it was in as soon as I hit it,” said Vandermay.

The goal served as a major turning point in the game. Hills dropped back and defended what they had, and the game picked up. But, with ten minutes left, Hills got a corner kick. Vandermay hit the ball into the box and Jake Samieske headed it home, leaving the game all but over with ten minutes left.

The final whistle blew, and the fans and players of Wayne Hills went bizerk. It was clear how much it meant to the players to get revenge on DePaul.

“I think the win against Depaul is huge for our team moral and definitely helps our confidence going into future games. We are on to the next game and are looking to continue success,” added Vandermay.

Come and support the team at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 17th at Clifton Stadium as the team will take on Hawthorne Christian in the Passaic County Semi- Finals.
