War Films and Literature Class To Be Offered Next Year

By Eddie Brim

For the 2016-2017 school year, a new class will be taught by English and Film Studies teacher Susan Price. This class is called “War Films and Literature,” and the class will learn about novels and movies that have war as a major theme, but the class will extend further than just war and will cover some lessons that would be taught in film, history, or English class as well. This class will allow students to look into what kind of impact war films and literature have had on the society and how accurate the wars in the novels and films really are. “War in film and literature often has themes of group identity, collective sacrifice, dehumanization of others, adaptability and the limits of endurance, and the after-effects of trauma all in addition to the theme of war,” said Price. Some of the novels that will be read include Erich Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front, and Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five,  a couple films that will be viewed include Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, and Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. All of these works include war as a primary theme and this class will have the students look further into the war aspect of the pieces. This class will certainly be one of the most interesting classes at WHHS. If you enjoy watching movies and reading books then this is the class for you, even if you just need another class to throw onto your schedule, why not make it War Films and Literature?
