After only a couple of snow days last year, students at Wayne Hills are hoping for a better turnout this winter. With only a few months left of the season and still no sign of a big snowstorm, students fear that they won’t get to experience the joy of waking up to no school due to snow.
Snow days are not only filled with huge piles of white fluffy snow, but a snow day to students is a surprising break from their incredibly busy lives. While having only a limited number of snow days to be used each year, students are hoping this year’s days will be used. Even delayed openings and early dismissals are being wished for, as they don’t take away days from Memorial Day weekend.
So far this year, there has been one snowstorm. The only problem was, it happened over a weekend. Students were able to enjoy the experience of waking up in a winter wonderland; however, no school was missed because of this snow.
People are wondering if snow days will even happen this year. A freshman at Wayne Hills, Gwen Baccaro, shared her theory: “I think that we might get one in the middle or end of February because that’s normally when we get a snowstorm, but schools try not to use their snow days if they can.” Gwen bases this theory on last year’s experience with receiving the “big” snowstorm at the end of February.
However, one concern with having a snow day is missing after-school clubs, activities, and sports. Many students have commitments to these extracurricular activities and can’t afford to cancel them due to snow days. For example, many students participate in the Student Dance Association (SDA), and having a snow day on one of their practice days would put them behind schedule. So, while snow days bring lots of joy and cheer, they could also really mess with students’ routine lives.
Another thing snow days could potentially ruin is Memorial Day weekend. If the township uses too many snow days, students will get fewer days on their Memorial Day break. Many families tend to go on vacation that weekend, so the snow days could potentially hamper their plans.
All in all, snow days can be either a good and bad thing. Even with all the troublesome things that come with it, students will never stop wishing for snow days. After all, there’s nothing like waking up to no school and the world covered in white.
