South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said recently he would vote for a Republican candidate who was NOT qualified to be President no matter what.

On Thursday February 4, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer interviewed Graham, who indicated his support for either Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio.  He also told Blitzer he had absolutely no interest in Donald Trump or Ted Cruz.   Graham described Trump’s foreign policy as “gibberish” and explained how Cruz, in reality, does not identify himself with the Republican Party’s beliefs, but instead acts as a Libertarian in Congress as Cruz is a Senator from Texas.

Blitzer then asked Graham who he would vote for if he thought the Republican nominee was not qualified for the job, implying that that person would either be Trump or Cruz as Graham does not see them as having enough experience for the position of President of the United States.  Graham simply replied and said that he would still vote for the Republican nominee in an effort to maintain his loyalty towards the party.

“It will be better for him to vote Republican if he’s Republican because they have the same views so it would benefit him to vote for someone who he doesn’t necessarily think is qualified rather than someone that has opposite political beliefs,” claims junior Alexis Long.

This is understandable as one may not express extreme interest for any particular candidate, but votes for the political party which shares more of his political views.  However, on CNN, Graham indicated that he does not have much in common with the two Republican front-runners as he does not agree with Trump’s foreign policy and has almost always voted the opposite way Cruz does during their terms in Congress.

Graham says that his beliefs are more similar to Trump and Cruz, but the real reason he would vote for these candidates is to improve his self-image as a Republican in order to get reelected as the Senator of South Carolina.

“Sadly, if he did cross the aisle and voted Democrat, his own party would black ball him and his days in government would be numbered.  It is a sad statement, but it is the truth.  Until we have term limits in Congress, this will NOT change,” says AP Government teacher Michael Shale.
