This year’s Oscars slapped, literally.

On Sunday, March 27, we saw Will Smith slap Chris Rock on live TV during the Oscars. It happened so suddenly that no one would have expected that out of all things to happen.

Chris Rock was presenting the award for the best documentary when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

“Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.” said Chris Rock referring to the movie G.I. Jane where the lead actress has a shaven head. While Will Smith was laughing at the joke Jada rolled her eyes in disapproval. Jada has been open about her struggle with alopecia which causes hair loss. She even stated in the past that she loved her shaved head and is confident about it.

“I think Chris Rock made a joke in bad taste and I think Will Smith overreacted. There are no heroes here,” says English teacher Mr. Goebelbecker.

Shortly after we saw Will get up on stage and slapped Chris Rock. After Will got off stage he yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your (EXPLETIVE) mouth!”

Shortly after, Smith received an Oscar for Best Actor for his leading role as King Richard; in a movie about Venus and Serena Williams. During his speech, Smith was clearly shaken and crying but didn’t apologize to Chris Rock directly.

However, in a post on Instagram Monday afternoon, Smith apologized to Chris Rock and the Academy.

“Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” he wrote. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Jada also made an Instagram post saying, “This is the season for healing. And I’m here for it.”

Chris Rock has not publicly spoken out about the incident. During his comedy show this Wednesday, March 30, Rock said he was still processing what had happened and will talk about it at some point.

” I think this is a publicity stunt but if not they are both in the wrong, I like Marty from Madagascar so I’m taking Chris’s side on this,” Noor Rana.

For context, Chris Rock plays Marty in Madagascar and Jada plays Gloria.
