Devastating Democratic Loss for the Council

By Geena Kim

As most of us know Tuesday, November 2, as a day off from school but it’s actually an important day for New Jersey, in particular Wayne. On Tuesday, voting in Wayne is occurring for the board of education, council, and mayor. The Wayne council is composed of nine members elected for a four-year term which forms the legislative branch for the town’s government. Some council functions are to establish tax rates, borrow funds, review and approve the annual budget, enter into legal contracts, and much more. Their overall objective is to overlook the city’s goals altogether.

There were three candidates from the Republican party and three from the Democratic party running for council member. With an estimated total of 51,716 voters, almost doubling the number of voters for the Democratic party for all candidates, it is safe to say that each candidate from the Republican party has won a spot on the council. All the Republican candidates were running under a reelected mayor, Christopher Vergano who won with 7,514 more votes compared to Arlene Sullivan.

With David Varano winning with 11,044 votes, he said on Facebook “Thank you to the residents of Wayne Township for another 4 years. We will continue to work on behalf of each and every one of you to uphold the principles and ideals that make this town great!” He was reelected to be a part of the council and promised to continue the ideals to perfect Wayne. “I can’t wait to see what the Wayne Council will do this year to help make Wayne a better town,” says Riya Kachroo, a junior at Wayne Hills.
