Glenn Youngkin Trumps McAuliffe in Virginia Elections

Glenn Youngkin of the Republican party has defeated Terry McAuliffe of the Democratic party to become the new governor of Virginia.

Terence Richard McAuliffe is an American businessman and politician who served as the 72nd governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018. Mcauliffe’s highlighted key points of his campaign such as providing quality education for every Virginian child, rebuilding the economy after COVID-19, ensuring every Virginian has access to quality and affordable healthcare, lowering prescription drug costs, ending the gun violence epidemic, and much more.

Glenn Youngkin, the new Virginia governor, is an American businessman who prior to entering politics, spent 25 years at the private-equity firm The Carlyle Group, later becoming its CEO. Youngkin’s key campaign points include reducing the cost of living, fully fund law enforcement, jumpstart the economy by protecting Virginians from Forced Unionization & Cutting Job Killing Regulations by 25%, and he plans to empower parents and restore excellence and commonsense in education.

Youngkin defeated Pete Snyder in the Republican convention for governor of Virginia which was held on May 8, 2021. Youngkin was able to secure 55% of the delegate vote while Snyder was only able to get 45%. Though in the run for Virginia governor, those margins were much slimmer. Youngkin only secured 50.7% over McAuliffe’s 48.6%.

In his victory speech, Youngkin states, “This stopped being a campaign long ago. This is the spirit of Virginia coming together like never before, the spirit of Washington and Jefferson and Madison and Monroe and Patrick Henry, of Virginians standing up and taking our commonwealth back.”

Wayne Hills Senior Nate Kressaty was very invested in the Virginia elections due to the fact that he might be going to college in Virginia. Nate said, “I am surprised to see that Youngkin took the spot for Virginia governor, I hope he does well to help the people of Virginia.”

Glenn Youngkin will be sworn in as the 74th governor, on January 15, 2022.
