Dia De Los Muertos Arrives in NYC

Dia De Los Muertos (day of the death) is a joyful celebration to remember the passing of loved ones. In the first days of November people make ofrendas (altars) leaving their loved ones candles, their favorite food and offerings to allow their souls to come back to the world. This is seen in their homes or cemeteries. This is also seen a lot in the Mexican cultural.

In Rockefeller center in New York, there is a presentation of Mexican sculptures representing Dia De Los Muertos. This has allowed many Mexican to feel connect to their special day. Many of the sculptures that they have are alebrijes which are considered spiritual mythical animals, catrinas which is recognizable symbol in the day of the death. Are all presented in the Rockefeller Center.

Dia De Los Muertos is being honored in NYC by showcasing Mexico’s heritages and traditions throughout art. Many New Yorkers love the idea of showcasing Mexican Cultural.

A New Yorker, Cruz Castro explained ” I believe that the art showcases perfectly what Dia De Los Muertos is all about. This is a good way to show love to the Mexican cultural, for those who came with nothing to the U.S would feel welcomed that they are showing respect to the Mexican tradition, This honors our loved ones that have crossed the path to the other side.”

NYC has welcomed many people to see the vibrant colors of the sculptures, by also celebrating the day of the dead. Many people love the idea of portraying this tradition to the city.

Joy Lee, a senior at Wayne Hills gives her input in this event.

” This brings awareness to the celebration to the day of the dead, People of Mexican descent are able to express themselves and be proud to show their cultural. It also can educate others about this event as people see it as a Halloween celebration,” said Lee.
