President Donald J. Trump held a closed-door meeting last week with Video Game Industry executives to explore new restrictions on violent video games.

The meeting also saw the airing of the notion that violent video games have contributed to the recent Parkland, Florida High School shooting. The video game industry executives that participated in this meeting included Robert Altman, the CEO of ZeniMax, along with Strauss Zelnick, the chief executive of Take-Two Interactive. The meeting began with President Trump showcasing a video featuring montages of violent scenes from rated M video games.

The VG executives expressed that there have been numerous studies showing that video games do not instigate violence in young children. Chris Colella, senior, stated, “I think the U.S Government is over exaggerating the effects of video game violence.”

Those who were a part of President Trump’s team during this meeting stated he was “open-minded” and “wanted to seek solutions from everyone” including the video game executives. The meeting also involved the argument that adding restrictions would violate their First Amendment rights. The meeting basically ends with most agreeing that violent video games should not be the only scapegoat for tragedies such as the Parkland High School shooting, along with the conclusion that there are many other influences capable of causing violent behavior. These include factors such as movies, books, television shows, and parents, who, in most cases, play the largest role in shaping children. To conclude, Dardan Veseli, senior, believes, “I think Trump is stupid for thinking video games cause violence, simple as that.”
