Matt Lauer, veteran host of The Today Show, was recently fired from NBC when sexual assault allegations were made public.

Adding to the slew of prominent men swiftly rendered pariahs in their own industries, Matt Lauer, respected journalist and longtime co-host on the Today Show, was fired by NBC on Nov. 29 when sexual misconduct allegations against him were made public. Lauer was fired a mere 34 hours after the accuser and her lawyer showed up at NBC; The New York Times reported late Wednesday that NBC had received at least two more complaints related to the allegations on Lauer since then.

Although the details of some accusations have not been made public, one accuser has said that Matt Lauer asked her to his office, where she engaged in sexual acts with him because she feared she would lose her job if she failed to comply. This occurred in 2001 so some don’t believe that it’s fair that this is from 16 years ago so it will be hard to prove. At the time of writing, the accuser’s name has not been revealed. Lauer has also been accused of giving an unwanted sex toy to an employee, dropping his pants in front of a woman in his office, and several other sexually perverse actions.

President Trump failed to openly condemn Lauer, tweeting, “Wow, Matt Lauer was just fired from NBC for ‘inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.’ But when will the top executives at NBC & Comcast be fired for putting out so much Fake News. Check out Andy Lack’s past!”. Lack is the chairman of NBC and MSNBC.

Some have suggested that Lauer’s predatory behavior explains his unusually combative interview with then-presidential candidate Hilary Clinton during a heavily criticized 2016 interview, as Vox reported late last month.

Many Americans were deeply saddened to hear the allegations made against Lauer, who was long one of the nation’s most respected broadcast journalists. One such American was Gina DiFiore, a mother of three who has watched Lauer since she was 15. DiFiore said, “I am personally surprised by his despicable actions and it saddens me that he turned out this way”.

Admitting to at least some of the allegations made against him, Lauer recently released the following statement on the controversy: “Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed”. Soon after he released another statement apologizing for his actions and the effect it will have on NBC and his family.

Lauer is not the only news anchor that was fired recently after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced; Charlie Rose, Emmy-winning host of the popular news show “Charlie Rose”, was fired by PBS on November 21.
