Quiz Bowl Advances

By Dan Kang, Assistant Senior Editor

As you may know, Quiz Bowl has been doing well lately in the BRITE Academic Tournament. The Bridgewater-Raritan Invitational Tournament of Excellence (B.R.I.T.E.), is a New Jersey State qualifying quiz contest preceding a National Academic Championship. Today, the B.R.I.T.E. tournament has grown to become the only one in NJ whose winner is an automatic qualifier for the National Academic Tournament. After the first three qualifying rounds, Team 1 and Team 2 were seeded #2 and #7 in the Sweet Sixteen respectively. The bracket was set up so that the #1 seeded team played the last seeded team and so on.

The Wayne Hills Quiz Bowl Team 1 faced Voorhees Team 2 and Team 2 is going to face Biotech High School Team 2 on March 7. Although Team 1 emerged victorious against Voorhees, unfortunately, Team 2 lost to Biotech High School and was eliminated from the tournament. It was a close game but ultimately the third game of the round decided the match. JT Brennan, Sandy Yang, Carlos Ayalo-Bellido, Carly Jeon, Michael Ferreira, and Jiyoung Song will no longer be able to play but they can still participate by attending the games of Team 1.

Due to the snow day on Tuesday on March 14, the next round was postponed to March 21. Team 1 did well in its Elite Eight match against Wayne Valley Team 2. Team members Daniel Kang, Jacob Rantas, Sudharshan Venkatesh, Maros Adamec, Robert Salita, and Justin Cohen now advance to play Wayne Valley Team 1 in the Final Four next Tuesday on March 28.

Senior Jacob Rantas said of his experience, “The past years of Quiz Bowl have been some of the most amazing years here at Wayne Hills. This year I think we can finally win it all.” The game will be held here since both schools are located in Wayne and it would not make any sense to travel all the way to Bridgewater. Congratulations to the Quiz Bowl team and good luck next week!
