Students Becoming Statisticians

By Jake Goldberg, Junior Editor

Now that the school year is coming to an end, teachers are beginning to pile on fourth marking period projects. One of these includes the AP statistics assignment where students must come up with their original study and then perform it within WHHS, using students as the subjects.

Although students have some restrictions as to how they carry out their particular study, there are a broad range of topics to choose from. Some students are attempting to figure out whether there is a correlation between two categories such as ethnicity and GPA’s while other students are trying to find out if the proportion of flavors of fruit snacks is equal for each flavor in every bag

Other studies cause students to become more involved. One of these includes junior Josh Kurzer’s study. In his study, Kurzer’s goal is to find the true proportion of high school students who can taste the difference between Sprite and Sierra Mist. This project “shows how you can apply the course to get the answers to real questions” claims Kurzer.

This interesting assignment is teaching students how to correctly conduct studies. It also teaches them how to accurately interpret their results as the students have to present their conclusions in front of their classmates.

Get involved as WHHS students are encouraged to become part of people’s studies.
