One Billion Dollar Drug Bust in Australia

One Billion Dollar Drug Bust in Australia

By Nick Tulino

Australian authorities have seized one billion Australian dollars (700 million USD) worth of the drug “ice” from a shipment of silicon bra inserts and art supplies from China. The bust (pun not intended) that took place on February 15, 2016, was one of the largest in Australia’s history. This was also the largest seizure of liquid meth in the world, 720 liters of the drug “ice” found. Four people have been charged over the shipment but no word has come out about what their punishment will be.

This was one of many shipments from China that officials have found drugs inside. Australian police first discovered around 190 liters hidden inside thousands of gel bras in a shipment from Hong Kong in December of last year. An additional 530 liters of the drug were found in art supplies stashed in storage units in Sydney. One Chinese national and two Hong Kong nationals were arrested in relation to the importation and manufacture of the drugs.

Australian officials are not sure how they will dispose of the drugs yet but they are currently working hard to make sure no more shipments like these happen again. “They should dispose of the drugs fast. I don’t think it affected anyone though, except the drug dealers since they just lost all their stuff,” said Freshman Ryan Mamedov.
