The Hills Robotics Team 9921 competed in the World Robotics Championship in Detroit, Michigan recently and is awaiting the results of the competition.

The annual World Robotics Championship, held from April 25-28,  includes over 30,000 students from 60 countries all over the world.

Each year, teams are tasked with creating a specific robot to compete against other teams in challenges. The challenge for 2017-2018 was the entitled “Relic Recovery” and required teams to build a mobile robot that was capable of picking up and placing items such as blocks.

Each robot was required to fit into an 18 by 18-inch square and each timed match consisted of four teams in two pairs of alliances. Each team’s robot was operated by two drivers who were responsible for controlling the robot and a coach, who was responsible for giving instructions to the drivers.

Points were earned by completing various tasks such as picking and placing blocks in certain patterns or parking the robot in marked off spots.

While the full results from the competition have not been released yet, the team believes that they did very well as a whole.

“I would say we did pretty well considering the circumstances,” junior Riya Solanky commented, “Some factors we can’t control, but the place was really nice and it was a good experience.”

Overall, the Patriots Robotics Team, led by teacher Robert Yost, has had a  successful season and is looking to do even better in future competitions.
