The Wayne Hills chapter of the National Honor Society recently inducted a select group of Hills students.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a prestigious organization with chapters in schools across the country. Admittance into NHS is based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS offers and participates in several activities and services at Wayne Hills and throughout the local community. One of their most well-known endeavors is Homework Help, held every school day during lunch in the Commons and freshman cafeteria. During Homework Help, NHS students help out students who need assistance with their homework or class assignments. Whether the homework is from Math, English, Science, History, World Language, or an Elective, NHS students are always there to lend a hand.

The induction ceremony took place in the Hills auditorium on October 26th, 2017. At the ceremony, NHS president Jaclyn Levendusky and some of the other NHS officers made speeches about the significance of induction into NHS. The Wayne Township B.O.E. states, “Selection for membership is the highest honor that can be accorded a high school student. This honor is bestowed upon students who can meet high standards in the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.  The Principal’s Faculty Council reviewed the applicants, and as a result, 95 students were inducted this year.”

The application process to become an NHS member is a lengthy procedure. To fulfill the scholarship pillar (and receive an invitation to apply), applicants must be in 11th or 12th grade and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. To fulfill the service pillar, applicants must make voluntary contributions to the school or community without compensation. To fulfill the leadership pillar, they must provide evidence that they are resourceful, capable problem solvers, and of course, leaders. Lastly, to fulfill the character pillar, applicants must be courteous, respectful, trustworthy, and have a clean disciplinary record.

Every student at Hills who received an invitation this year met the requirements for induction. Congratulations to all these students!
