Child Development Students Begin Teaching

By Allie Allen, Staff Writer

Seniors in Child Development III have begun leaving the school campus to student teach at local elementary schools such as Pines Lake, A. P. Terhune, Theunis Dey, and Packanack, first starting on Monday January 30th.

After being in child development class for two years, their third year comes with the extra responsibility and commitment to student teaching.  Seniors travel to different elementary schools and are paired up with a teacher whose classroom they will then join. They are given lesson plans and encouraged to teach the class as if it was their own.

Senior Keely Hassert, who student teaches at A. P. Terhune Elementary School, says, “I love being able to teach a class, it really helps me picture my future career as a teacher. It makes me more eager to become one as well.”

Child development III holds a great program that lets seniors visualize what their future career will be like if they plan on seeking a job in education. And if teaching is not in their future career plans, being able to experience a teacher’s point of view is important and enlightening, considering we have all been students at one point.
