Julie Andrews Turns 80

Julie Andrews Turns 80

By Michelle Lampariello, Staff Writer

Julie Andrews, perhaps Britain’s most famous singer and actress, turned 80 on October 1st. Known for her many roles in films and musicals, including  Mary Poppins, The Princess Diaries, and The Sound of Music, Andrews has acquired countless British and American fans since her on-screen debut in Ford Star Jubilee in 1956. Her singing voice is still treasured by many, despite a 1997 surgery preventing her from having full use of her vocal cords ever again. However, Andrews has embraced her aging, and does not dwell on what she has lost due to the passage of time. For her 79th birthday last year, she released a parody of The Sound of Music’s “My Favorite Things,” including lyrics about growing older. Festivities for her 80th birthday are currently undisclosed, but Andrews has made it clear that she is “still busy” and is not looking to retire anytime soon. This is good news for fans of Andrews, who consider her to be a “true inspiration for all singers,” according to Nicole Lampariello, a freshman choir student at WHHS.
