Leo Club Takes Trip to Foundation for the Handicapped

Students from the Leo Club recently went on a trip to the Foundation of the Handicapped in Wayne.

The Leo Club is a community service organization that provides social service activities and encourages youths to develop leadership qualities.

The Foundation for the Handicapped was founded in 1966 by the Wayne Rotary to provide long-term employment for developmentally disabled adults. The foundation provides services such as packaging, specialized manufacturing, and mail fulfillment. They are also given the opportunity to work with others and participate in organized activities.

About 52 students from Hills and Valley went on the trip. The students who attended the trip sang songs with the disabled adults and helped them with their daily activities.

It is an annual trip where students bring gifts to the handicapped individuals who are employed there. Each Leo Club member is assigned an individual and is given his/her wish list. The Leo then buys a gift to give.

The staff at the Foundation for the Handicapped provides the adult handicapped individuals with holiday treats. This has been a tradition at WHHS for a very long time.

Jaylin Montalvo, a junior at WHHS, said, “The part I enjoyed most was seeing everyone’s face full of excitement when they received their gifts. I also enjoyed singing the carols and everyone singing along.”
