Marketing Class Changing its Ways

By Cameron Dodds and Rebecca Sands

This year, marketing is changing its ways and becoming more serious. How may you ask? By taking on projects that they haven’t gotten involved with before. In previous years, marketing classes haven’t put themselves out there or attempted to market social events, clubs, or news around WHHS. Since there are more Marketing 2 students than there have been in the past, this enables the classes to reach out and contribute to the school. “I’m excited about teaching marketing two this year. The students will be working on projects for activities going on in the school throughout the year. It’s a great learning opportunity for both the students and myself. I look forward to a fun and exciting year ahead,” says Jennifer Piro, teacher.   The Marketing 2 classes will be taking on social events such as spirit week, and also benefiting yearbook, The Patriot Press, and the morning announcements.

There has been conversation about raffling off a yearbook to try to make students and staff more interested. If the yearbook classes choose to hold the raffle, students and teachers will be given the opportunity to buy a raffle ticket for five dollars and have the chance to win a yearbook. The winners will be chosen during the Spirit Rally in November. The marketing classes are hoping that this raffle will help get students and teachers more interested in the yearbook class. All the proceeds from the raffle will be put towards the yearbook and making sure that it can reach it’s full potential. Another task the marketing two classes are taking on is trying to inform WHHS, but mostly freshman, about what the actual message of spirit week should be. Spirit week is about coming together as the WHHS community and lending a helping hand to other communities. Money wars and the food drive are only some ways that the school can come together during spirit week. These fundraisers are meant to be fun and exciting, but also competitive among grade levels. Marketing 2 students will be making posters to hang around the school to inform students of the events and advertise spirit week altogether. “It’s really great being in marketing two this year. The plans our class has for WHHS are completely different than anything we have done in the past. Being involved in the process is awesome,” said Lauren Drogy, a senior.

The Patriot Press and the morning announcements are the two biggest ways of finding out school news. The Patriot Press is the student run newspaper at WHHS, but the journalism class in conjunction with the club updates the online site – whhspatriotpress.com almost daily. This year, the Marketing 2 classes are looking to get more students and staff interested in The Patriot Press by advertising the newspaper around the school with posters and discussing it with fellow classmates and staff. Other school news sources are the morning announcements which are read every morning in homeroom. What marketing two would like to achieve is to get students and staff to listen more closely to the information that they are being given. In the past year, the morning announcements have introduced video announcements which are shown twice a month. Some homeroom teachers forget to show these videos and that can disconnect students from the rest of their day. Marketing 2 students are sending reminders to homeroom teachers and making posters to get students interested in the video announcements.

All in all, Marketing 2 is looking forward to the changes they will be making in the upcoming year at WHHS. Along the way, they are also inspiring some students taking Marketing 1 to continue on in the field. “I’m excited about the work that the Marketing 2 classes are putting together this year. If I was not a senior I would definitely continue onto Marketing 2,” says Elise Vandermay a senior who is currently enrolled in Carla McClain’s marketing one class. Hopefully these improvements encourage students and staff to become more involved in the social events at our school. These advertisements may also help people become more interested in marketing and make them want to take the class in future years.
