Oklahoma Shuts Down Disposal Wells after Earthquake

By Chloe Belmar

Disposal wells in Oklahoma are being shut down by the state after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the area on September 3, 2016. In a recent U.S Geological Survey, it was found that oil and gas drilling, hydraulic fracturing or fracking are a major cause of earthquakes, which has made the country more susceptible to the quakes.

Wayne Hills teacher Robert Hittinger says,”It’s nothing people living on the East Coast need to worry about.” However, people in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, and many other states may be affected by poisoned water, polluted sewers, and earthquakes like these. The earthquake matched the record with an eathquake that took place in November of 2011 as the strongest in state history. Oklahoma has already ordered the shutdown of 37 wells. Student Monica Borsella thinks,”closing down the disposal wells won’t help the cause, the damage has already been done.”
