“Eventful” is an understatement for summer 2016. Continuing with the general trend of 2016, summer brought us many shocking, strange, and amazing stories that continue to remind us that we are living in a world of constant change.

Here’s a look back at some of the major headlines from the summer:

Brexit – In a surprise result, the United Kingdom voted in June to leave the European Union, unprecedented until now. The decision has drawn criticism from many foreign and local government leaders, including First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon, who has vowed that Scotland will stay in the EU. The process could take as long as two years to fully complete, and with all of the drama surrounding it, the European Union is eager to begin the process.

Juno probe reaches Jupiter – After leaving Earth in 2011, NASA’s Juno spacecraft has reached it’s destination of Jupiter. During it’s mission, Juno will provide data and information about Jupiter’s climate, so scientists can better understand Jupiter and its moons. Juno has already begun providing scientists and the public with valuable information, taking extraordinary photos of Jupiter’s never before seen North pole.

Pokemon Go – One of the the most uplifting stories of the year, Niantic’s Pokemon Go attracted millions of players worldwide, at one point acquiring more daily users than Twitter. Through the use of augmented reality, players are able to capture Pokemon, collect supplies at pokestops, and battle at gyms based on locations in the real world. Although this technology is nothing new, first seen in Niantic’s Ingress in 2012, Pokemon Go finally brought augmented reality to the mainstream. With future updates on the way, Pokemon Go can hopefully keep the immense popularity it has earned over the summer. (Article coming soon).

Solar airplane navigates the Earth – Over 16 months, Solar Impulse became the first fully solar-powered plane to fly around the world, beginning and ending its trip in Abu Dhabi. While not exactly practical, Solar Impulse‘s flight is a testament to the potential of solar power, which looks to be one of the most promising renewable energy sources.

Rio Olympics – Undoubtedly the biggest headline of the Summer, Brazil hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first ever to be held in South America. Despite many indications that Rio was not prepared to host the games, relatively little problems arose, and Americans got to watch the amazing Women’s Gymnastics team and legendary Michael Phelps win gold. However, there were certainly some downright bizarre stories to come with the Olympics, such as the green water in the diving pool, and Ryan Lochte’s scandal.

ISIS removed from Turkish border – ISIS has been losing for a while, but Turkish and Kurdish forces delivered a devastating blow to ISIS’s war effort early September by removing the last ISIS foothold on the Turkish border. Without any direct contact to Turkey, ISIS is effectively cut off from the outside world. This makes it extremely difficult to receive supplies from sympathizers, recruit new soldiers, and send out terrorists to carry out attacks on foreign soil.

United States and China ratify Paris climate agreement – After the world came together in  Paris last year to adopt new environmental regulations, the United States and China, the world’s two largest polluters, officially ratified the agreement in early September. This means that any stipulations in the agreement that apply to the US and China are now legally binding, and hopefully means that both countries will work towards reducing their emissions and overall impact on the environment
