Flint’s Water Crisis

Flints Water Crisis

By Jaclyn Dericks

Recently in Flint, Michigan, residents have had serious concerns with what is being leaked into their water supply. Large amounts of lead have been exposed to the water, urging Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder, to announce a state of emergency to take place while they try to find a conclusive solution to this problem. He is also proposing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to update the infrastructure of the water supplies and pipes. Studies show, that for over a year more than 100,000  people had been getting water from the Flint river instead of from Lake Huron from Detroit’s water system. It was around this time that people started complaining about the odd colors in their tap water. The percentage of children with high levels of lead nearly doubled after the switch, according to a local hospital’s findings. “The sedimentation will recoat the pipes and will lower the lead levels to below safety standards. Unfortunately, it could take months for that to happen,” predicts science teacher Gregory Panas. The future of Flint is undeclared, however we hope people will stay safe and really comply with the state of emergency that has taken place.
