WHHS Boys Basketball Shoots Off To A Great Start

By Jaclyn Dericks

The WHHS boys basketball team has shot off to a great start this season, winning their first home game, 63-50, on December 18, 2015. They continued their winning streak on December 22 with a score of 87-57, followed by a recent win against Lakeland on Thursday, January 7th. The team has certainly put in a lot of effort and hard work this year, starting with their training in the off season in late March of 2015, where they participated in various leagues and tournaments to work on the aspects that would lead to their success. “This group has taken a work-first mentality. They are not afraid of hard work and I am hoping they are seeing the benefits of it,” says head coach Kevin Grimes. Overall, they have made an immense leap from last year, when around the same time they were 0-6.  Currently, the boys stand at a record of 6-1, so it is outstanding to see how far the team has come. The team plays in honor of the late Jon Goldstein, who died two years ago after serving in numerous athletic capacities at Hills including assistant football and basketball coach, varsity golf coach and assistant to the athletic director.   Everyone teamed up during the past two years in honoring “Goldy” during the games, and continue this season in being motivated to win each game for him. The team will hopefully continue putting in the same amount of dedication at their next game against Wayne Valley on Tuesday, January 12th.
