This year’s winter Olympics is taking place in Beijing, China from February 4th-20th. Currently, there are 91 countries worldwide competing for Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals. Some of the sports seen in this year’s Olympic games will be: Women’s Monobob, Men’s and Women’s Big Air (Freestyle Skiing), Mixed Team Snowboard Cross, Mixed Team Aerials, Mixed Team Short Track Relay, and Mixed Team Ski Jumping.

On Wednesday February 2nd, Lindsey Jacobellis won the USA’s first gold medal. The following day, the United States won two more medals thanks to Nathan Chan and Chloe Kim.

As of now the United States is keeping ten medals putting us in fourth place.

Currently, Germany is taking the lead with Norway standing close behind. The United States is taking fourth place with four gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze medal.

“It’s a shame Yuzuru Hanyu didn’t do well considering how well he’s done at Nationals Competition, leading up to the winter game,” says Sophomore Brynn Buckley.

 The United States gold medalists from skateboarding are Chloe Kim and Lindsey Jacobellis. As well as Nathan Chen who has won a gold medal for figure skating. For freestyle skiing the gold medalists are Ashley Caldwell, Christopher Lillis, Eric Loughran, Justin Schoenefeld, and Winter Vinecki. “I congratulate them for their hard work and find their stories inspiring,” says Sophomore Radha Pingle.
