New ShopRite Location Coming to Wayne

By Sasha Budesa, Staff Writer

From the rubble of Wayne Hills Mall rises a new building, its sheer gray facade crowned with a distinctive bright red sign, proudly reading: ShopRite. That’s right, ShopRite’s latest location will be opening this Halloween at 7 am, on the site of the former Wayne Hills Mall off Berdan Avenue.

The new location will be ShopRite’s biggest location to date, at 79,540 square feet, significantly larger than ShopRites current Wayne Location at Plaza Square Shopping Center on Hamburg Turnpike. The location at Hamburg Turnpike will be permanently closed on October 30th, a day before the opening of the new location.

The new store will have a bakery, a butcher shop, a produce department, and a liquor store. Stephen Hittman, chief executive officer for Crossroads Companies, said, “[the store will feature] upgraded amenities while keeping the same ShopRite brand that customers have grown to love and trust”.

The construction of the new ShopRite is a part of a wider economic revitalization program taking place in Wayne, which has included the construction of a WholeFoods on Valley Road, a new movie theater at Willowbrook Mall, a Lightbridge Academy daycare center, and a Kering distribution center on Totowa Road.

The new ShopRite location will be a twenty-minute walk and a five-minute drive from Wayne Hills High School. Chayse Buckley, a senior at Wayne Hills, said, “I’m excited [to go to the New ShopRite because] I no longer have to go to Stop and Shop because of the Hinchman ShopRite no longer stocking the shelves.”
