Wayne Hills Helps: Heartwarming Valentines Day Donations

By Kendra Levendusky, Staff Writer

At Wayne Hills, giving back to the community is an incredibly important contribution that is valued and taught.

Community service is a curriculum requirement for the transition classes here at WHHS. A teacher of these classes, Sarah Getzke, and her students have visited the Preakness Healthcare Center in previous years and plan do to so this coming Valentines Day.

Students enrolled in the Transition program, SLE programs, Life Skills, and Community Based Instruction, the Girls and Boys basketball teams, Art and National Honor Society, STARS club, Winter track team, Child Development, Piro’s marketing classes, and the Wayne Hills Theater Workshop will actively be participating n the collecting of the items needs for the residents.

“I have visited this facility in previous years and have seen the impact the kids have on the residents.” said Getzke, “They are so appreciative, and it genuinely makes their days.”

To bring to the residents as a Valentine’s Day gift, the participants ask for 300 unscented travel sized body washes, 300 valentines day cards, 200 socks for women, 100 socks for men, and 300 Hershey hugs and kisses.

The items will be assembled and packaged into bundles to be handed out during the visit on Valentines Day. This experience and these donations are sure to put a smile on the faces of all of the people involved, both the participants and the residents.

Getzke expresses her appreciation for the donations being given and all of the help and support. “Having had a grandparent who had to be placed in a Nursing Home, I know impactful these visits can be in enriching the lives and experiences of the residents.”

Donations are to be dropped off in room 109 until February 1st. The helpers of the project thank you in advance.
