Plans Underway for Relay for Life

By Victoria Balduzzi and Bella Ishak

Relay for Life preparations have already begun and the committee could not be more excited.

On Wednesday, January 9, the Relay team had a successful kickoff. The kickoff consisted of food, games, guest speakers, and a glimpse of the luminaria display done at the overnight Relay event. Many came to support a great cause and kick off the season of Relay.

The Wayne Relay Committee Chairs Seniors Stephanie Cassamassina and Cassie Fierro. Juniors Louis Messercola and Kyla Gallipoli are very excited for the upcoming months. They cannot wait to raise awareness for cancer. Last year they collected $96,000 toward cancer research programs.  This year  Messercola said he “hopes we are able to collect $100,000.”

Mayor Christopher Vergano attended the kickoff and spoke about his experience with cancer. There were several attendees that were survivors or had lost a family member to cancer. Courtney White, a Wayne Valley Junior, shared her experience with cancer and how she didn’t let it stop her from doing the things she loves.

“I think it will be a big success and we have many big things in the works,” said Senior Stephanie Cassamassina.

Relay has been an event in the Wayne community for over 10 years hosted at Wayne Valley High School. The Wayne Relay this year is on May 18 starting at 4 pm. The participants of relay will walk around, have fun and support a great cause.
