The first episode of ABC’s brand new drama Wicked City was a show filled with murder, suspense, romance, and a satisfying ounce of action in every scene. It officially premiered on October 27, leaving viewers with mixed opinions and strong thoughts regarding the subject matter of the show. To summarize, the main character, Kent Grainger, is a serial killer who finds joy in luring young women to their death. He disguises himself as a perfectly sane and attractive young man with false motives to “help” girls achieve their deepest desires and goals in life.  After the brutal murders of multiple women are exhibited, he finally finds a woman that he falls madly in love with, her name being Betty Beaumontaine. She eventually begins to display having similar character traits as Kent, with a sociopathic attitude and a lust for blood, creating a successful plot twist in the story. Overall, Wicked City had the amazing ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats with constant suspense and thrills.

Clearly, however, many online reviewers did not feel the same way. Recent articles have shown that the show was viewed as immoral, sexist, misogynistic, and a failed attempt to manifest the idea that murder is the worst sin of all while adultery and drug abuse can be excused. Others felt that the overall concept of the show was overused and unoriginal, serial killer themes being too common on television in our society today. Despite the negativity, however, the show still managed to be a slight hit, especially with young teens. When Danielle McKnight, a junior at WHHS, was asked about the topic, she stated, “I really love Serial Killer-themed shows. I think they are very interesting and very mysterious. I like them more when it’s hard to to figure out who the serial killer is. I have heard of Wicked City but I haven’t watched it yet. It sounds just up my alley though!” Hopefully others agree and tune in to Wicked City every Tuesday night on ABC!
