As the school year is nearing the end, everyone is preparing for summer while seniors are preparing for their big night at prom.

Prom night is known for being one of the last class celebrations for seniors and their dates. Everyone can just be themselves and attend wearing what makes them feel beautiful and confident. Some boys and girls will wear a tuxedo, some will wear a dress. Same-sex couples are being seen more and more at proms all around the world. Being an advocate for LGBT Community, it is quite clear that times are changing and making our world a better place for us to live and enjoy life. Same-sex couples at proms are just as acceptable as heterosexual couples.

Earlier this week, a Twitter storm erupted over the following scenario: Theodore Vidal & Colin Beyers were on their way home from their prom at the Jersey Shore. As the couple was walking home hand in hand, a group of bar-goers was on the rooftop bar on the boardwalk. These bar-goers were shouting from the balcony at all the couples passing by, “Kiss her, kiss her, kiss her”. As the gay couple walked past the bar, the bar-goers changed their chant to, “Kiss him, kiss him, kiss him”. Of course, the gay couple kissed and they were applauded. This just goes to show that the times in the acceptance of the LGBT community are advancing in a positive direction.

Isabelle Wilders (11th grade) and Samantha Bock (11th grade), both state very positive points of view on the matter. “It shouldn’t matter who you go with to prom. As long as they’re happy, that’s all that matters,” Bock & Wilders stated. Brianne Korbanick also gave in her opinion as well. “I think it’s awesome! Everyone has the right to take whoever they want to prom. Whatever will make the best night for them, they are entitled to do,” Korbanick says.

All in all, times are moving forward positively for the Youth LGBT Community. Acceptance is a major key to being a teenager in today’s society by friends and family. As time goes on, there won’t even be a need to “come out” and just be automatically accepted for who you are.
