Pat Shurmur was named the 20th Head Coach in New York Giants franchise history.

After a miserable 3-13 season that entailed everything from suspended cornerbacks to the benching their iconic starting quarterback for Geno Smith, the Giants have finally done something productive in hiring veteran coach Pat Shurmur. Shurmur who was formerly the Offensive Coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings is someone the Giants fan base can get excited about. He made this guy look like a legitimate MVP candidate. He also transformed Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, two pretty solid receivers, into arguably top ten receivers.

Before his recent stint with the Vikings, Shurmur was once upon a time the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. During his stint as the Browns head coach, they went 9-23 in two years. The fact that Shurmur was able to squeeze NINE WINS out of that franchise is probably more of a miracle than this play that sent the New Orleans Saints home a few weeks ago. All jokes aside, Shurmur has gotten the most out of his players and team regardless of which team he has been a part of. He is most notably known for his job at bringing the best out of his quarterbacks, especially Donovan McNabb, Sam Bradford, Carson Wentz, and Case Keenum. All of these quarterbacks have had a career year working alongside Shurmur, which is a good sign for New York.

Shurmur will bring what the Giants sorely need, which is a no none-sense type that brings the professionalism and class that comes with being associated with the New York Giants that Ben McAdoo lacked. He will be tasked to find the talent and will that the Giants team last year had while also micromanaging the Eli Apple situation as well as keeping star wide out Odell Beckham Jr. in check. Depending on who they draft with that shiny Second Overall Pick, Shurmur might have to raise another young quarterback, which history has shown he has no problem doing. If he and new General Manager Dave Gettleman decide to go with a non-quarterback player such as Saquon Barkely, they could decide to roll with Eli and try to give number ten one last hurrah, just as his brother did a few years ago.

Jared Cohen, a Junior, inquired, “If Shurmur can get the defense back to playing at an elite level and get the offense to be serviceable, the Giants will make the playoffs again.”

Regardless of what personal decisions lie ahead, Pat Shurmur was and is the right man for the job, and as a fellow Giants fan, I look forward to seeing what results he can have in the Big Apple.
