About March Madness

By Dan Abate, Staff Writer

March Madness is one of the biggest sporting events in the country. It attracts excitement, crowds and a ton of revenue for the NCAA. March Madness isn’t enjoyed only from the stands. Participating in a pool has become a sport all on its own. Each year, millions fill out a bracket with their projections of which team will win each round. Not only are they playing for pride but, in some cases, a big prize. “I make a bracket every year because not only is it fun to follow the games, but you have the chance the win a ton of money,” mentioned senior Jason Cote.

The three-week tournament started on March 17. The tournament consists of 64 teams under the pressure of the single elimination style of play. The teams are ranked 1 through 16 and sorted into four regions. Each round the number gets smaller and smaller, going from 64 to 32 to the Sweet 16 round followed by the Elite Eight. The Elite Eight determines the winners in each region. Those winners face off in the Final Four until there’s only one team left standing at the ‘Big Dance.’
