On the night of Sunday, December 8th around 10 pm, the news struck social media that the biggest deal in sports history had been signed. Juan Soto, a former New York Yankees outfielder, signed with the New York Mets for a massive $765 million deal that will last 15 years.
It was soon reported that even after all of his years on the team, the Yankees had refused to give Soto a home suite, while the Mets gladly handed one to him right away. They also gave him four premium seats at home games, and he and his family will be granted security for both home and away games. Another part of his contract states that he will be given the number “22” for his jersey, which he has had on every other team he played for. Third baseman for the Mets, Brett Baty, has had the number “22” for two years, but must give it up due to the parameters of Soto’s contract.
Avid Yankees fan and Wayne Hills Varsity baseball player Michael Kardasis said, “I think [Soto] is a fraud, and not worth anywhere near that amount of money. I think the Yankees will improve without him, spending their money elsewhere.”
On the other hand, Mets fan James Gougousis is all for Soto’s new spot on the team, saying “I think it’s fantastic because Juan Soto is the bat the Mets have been missing for the past few years. I believe that Soto can lead the Mets to multiple championships in the future.”
It is clear that baseball fans have different opinions on Soto’s new deal, but his worth will ultimately be proven once the MLB season kicks up again on March 27 and he gets a chance to start hitting for the New York Mets.
