A mix of emotions are shared as upperclassmen begin their next year of school – some are excited to return, while others don’t seem to be looking forward to the new year. Over the first week of school, various upperclassmen at Wayne Hills High School shared thoughts on their brand-new chapter of high school.
As we interviewed upperclassmen at Wayne Hills High School, we noticed that most students were nervous about moving onto a new grade. Starting a new grade can bring other stressors. For example, many seniors commented on how they were mainly occupied with college applications, Juniors were desperate to graduate and become seniors, and sophomores worried about their increased workload.
Although it seems like some of the students were not enthusiastic. There were also students that were excited about the new school year and change. Many seniors were excited to graduate and for prom, juniors are looking forward to applying for college, and sophmores have a better understanding of the school and its expectations. “I would consider the first week pretty easy, knowing my way around the school,” Sophomore Emilio Roca commented. Junior Audrey Hitchmen stated, “I feel less scared as an upperclassman. I feel like I have more freedom.”
Most of the seniors we interviewed weren’t really in the school spirit anymore. After all of the time they spent here, they aren’t expecting anything new during their last year. Senior Imane Chenni replied, “Kind of just hit that were all seniors, but it feels good, still. School’s school though, so, don’t really wanna be here.”
Another senior, Sarah Ramirez, stated, “I’m just tired. I want it to be over with, man. I’ve done this for four years in a row. The same thing is happening over and over again. I just wanna graduate.” Seems like the seniors don’t have a lot of patriot pride.
Some students are feeling stressed about the new year but others are feeling happy and excited to have new freedoms as an upperclassmen. There are a lot of different emotions with the new school year.
