Mu Alpha Theta – Math Club

By Dan Kang

An all new club has been created – the math club! This year, the math club has gained many new members. Last year, there was a math club chapter but it started relatively late in the year. Only one team was sent to a competition. This year, the math club has revived with the help of Mr. Zambrano, vice principal and advisor, and the president, Megan Carey. Applications were filled out for positions of vice president, secretary, and treasury. Requirements to join are only a 3.5 GPA and one might add the enthusiasm of a genuine love for mathematics. The last meeting was held on January 27, 2016 where the positions were all announced. Junior Sudharshan Venkatesh is vice president, senior Richard Rossbach is secretary, and junior Scott Moroch is treasurer. The positions were all chosen by Mr. Zambrano, who looked for the qualities a math club needs in its officers. There will be math club members available at lunch or after school to tutor students who may need additional help in the subject of math. Also, at least five teams of five people each signed up for a math competition, which is going to be held at Wayne Hills High School on a Saturday. Everyone involved in the math club seems to be excited for further challenges.

Megan Carey says, “We’re very excited about the huge increase in membership we saw this year and are hoping to get involved in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge and possibly a few other competitions. We are also going to have people participate in the Study Buddy program, which would connect Math Honor Society members to students in other schools/districts over the computer for tutoring.” Hima Tallam also added, “We want to boost participation in Mu Alpha Theta and create a well-established honor society so that it continues on and grows after we graduate.” Unfortunately it is too late to join the math club now but next year there will be positions available to fill.
