Andrej Solomonovic, Jake Samieske, and Josh Kurzer start the Philosophy club

Three juniors at WHHS take on a new leadership role as they start the first ever Philosophy Club.  Andrej Solomonovic, Jake Samieske, and Josh Kurzer are creating an inviting, discussion based club that asks the most difficult questions in life. The Philosophy club meetings are casual, in which conversations are started with a simple topic or question that begin a flowing discussion, taking the group into a completely different direction. The club is an open atmosphere where everyone can speak their mind and have their thoughts heard. Scott Summers is the teacher advisor of the club and assists the meetings by leading the discussions, but the club remains to be almost 100% ran by students. Samieske explains how the idea to form the club began. “Andrej, Josh and myself have had the idea to have a philosophy club for a while now.  We took the class last year and fell in love with it, but it was, unfortunately, a one year course only,” Junior Samieske explains. “We wanted to continue learning philosophy.”

Solomonovic, Samieske, and Kurzer have exciting plans for the future of the club. The boys hope that the club could one day organize field trips to college philosophy classes or museums, and have guest speakers come to the meetings. The first meeting took place on Thursday, December 10, but anyone interested is still encouraged to join. The Philosophy club next meeting will take place January 7th, 2016, after winter break. “Anyone is welcome as long as they are willing to explore the world around them,” said Solomonovic states.
