Hills Tennis Still On Top

Extending their reputation as one of the best tennis teams in North Jersey, the WHHS Girls Tennis Team continues to win matches, starting the 2017 season with a 3-2 record. Despite two tough losses to Ridgewood and Fair Lawn, Hills closed out a good win over rivals Wayne Valley and smothered Lakeland and West Milford.
“The team has definitely improved, with strong incoming freshmen, as well as returning players who have improved their game,” said JV coach Todd Green. Among the returning players are First Singles Angela Reyzelman, Second Singles Kalina Totzeva, and Third Singles Riya Solanky, with Maddy Flynn and Victoria Loffredo playing First Doubles. Second Doubles features the only freshman on varsity, Lauren Reiser, teaming up with Melissa Gormus.
“A lot of people tried out, [and we] had to make a few cuts, unfortunately,” Coach Green recounted. There were over 30 people trying out, with roughly under 20 spots available on the team. The number of spots on the team is limited by the number of courts as well as the size of the teams other schools have.
Reviewing the team’s biggest rivals, varsity coach Keogh tells the Patriot Press that “[Wayne] Valley and Fair Lawn are in our league… We want to play our best in every match, but in our division those teams have been the strongest and most consistent.”
In terms of prospects, the team “hopes to win counties once again, hopefully all the players win, hopefully we win 4 years in a row,” says varsity captain Kalina Totzeva, pictured. “Hopefully, second or third round of states, but we’ve never made it that far,” she adds.
