
The rise in plane crashes over the last few months has got fliers and workers on edge.
The plane crashes that have happened over the span of a few months are the one in DC, the one in Philly, and the one in Toronto.
The American Airlines flight and the US Army Black Hawk helicopter collided near Ronald Reagan National Airport on January 29th. They plunged into the Potomac River, killing both the people on board the aircraft and the people in the helicopter. There were no survivors.
On January 31st, a Learjet 55, Flight 056 flown by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance crashed a little while after take off. It plummeted to the Castor Gardens neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It killed everyone on board.
The most recent crash, which happened at around 1:15 pm CST time on February 17th, Delta Airlines Flight 4819 was cleared to land at the Toronto Pearson International Airport, which then led to the plane crashing, catching on fire, and flipping upside down. All of the 76 passengers and four crew members survived, but 21 of those passengers were transported to the hospital. The only compensation these people are getting is $30,000, and many people are upset. They are concerned to hear that after escaping death, their life is only worth $30,000. Many people are coming out and saying that if they sue Delta, they can easily get 10x the money that Delta is offering.
On February 18th, one day after the crash, the Canadian Transportation Safety Board recovered the black boxes. Black boxes are the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. These help investigators figure out the events that lead up the plane crash. CBS news said that the very icy and snowy weather may have contributed to the crash.
Freshman, Valentina Lopez, expressed her concerns for the recent accidents, saying, “Recently, there have been a few plane crashes in different parts of the world. These accidents have caused loss of life and have led to investigations to find out what went wrong. Engineers should have tested the plane more thoroughly to ensure passengers safe flight. The goal is to make flying safer for everyone.”
The rise of plane crashes have affected everyone across the world. Many people are scared to fly now, and lots of people are cancelling their upcoming flights. In recent years, 71% of people deemed flying remotely safe, but that number has declined ever since the uproar of plane crashes. This year, 64% of people said flying is safe, which is a 6% decline.
